5 things wrong with 13 reasons why
While the Netflix original show was supposed to be an eye opener on how high school bullying can have adverse effects the show itself did not do much justice to the initial plotline. Here are 5 things wrong with 13 reasons.

1. The show was supposed to address mental health issues, but it is just briefly mentioned

When 13 reasons why was in the initial stages of its making, it was claimed to be a show that brings to light the mental issues and importance of addressing those issues especially among teenagers and high school students. However, the basic plot of the show is diverted away from this message entirely as it becomes a suicide revenge story. Hannah’s life and how she dealt with her mental health after moving to a new town should have been the focus, but the story was more inclined towards her unrequited love story with Clay.

2. No actual way of dealing with the issues are shown

Hannah deals with mental problems, and so does a lot of other characters, but no one in the show does anything to deal with the issues or help the others. Even the school counselor who is supposed to help Hannah and later Clay does not do anything concrete to address the problems or even talk to the students.

3. Romanticizing suicide

Hannah’s suicide scene was shown very vividly and while death or such type of violence itself is not unseen, the way the scenes leading up to her suicide and the ones before that were shot in a way that is very ‘poetic’ in itself.

4. The school’s way of dealing with the death of a student

Hannah committed suicide due to depression, loneliness and the school instead of focusing on preventing its students from engaging in any such type of behavior. The school brushes the whole thing under the rug and choose to ignore it. The school had a zero policy code of dealing with bullies and students who are being targeted by the bullies.

5. The target audience

13 reasons why was mainly targeted at an audience of adolescents and pre-adolescents showing them how healthy mental health is necessary but not only did the show miss its original plot point it also has a lot of scenes which should not be present in a show targeted at that age group.

While the show has these major blunders, a lot of people still love it ( given that it is being renewed again for the third season). There is still a lot it missed from where it started, and hopefully, it will cover up in the next season.
