A Tribute to Kalaignar Karunanidhi!
The former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi passed away on 7th of August, 2018 at the age of 94. He was a writer, politician and former CM for the state of Tamil Nadu.

Muthuvel Karunanidhi is the full name of M. Karunanidhi is an Indian politician. He is the third Chief Minister of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He is the president of the Tamil Nadu based political party, Dravida Munnetra kazhagam. He was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five times and MLA for 13 times. He served the people of Tamil Nadu as Chief Minister for 25 years and as MLA for approximately 63 years. M.R Radha gave him the title of Kalaignar during the Thooku media play, which is still called by his followers. He also worked as a writer in the Tamil film industry. Kalaignar was born on 3rd of June 1924 to the couple Muthuvel and Anjam. He was the third child after two elder female siblings.

He was named as Dakshinamurthy during his birth after Lord Shiva. Karunanidhi was from a Telugu ancestral. In his childhood days, Kalaignar was more interested in music, writing and activism than academics. Karunanidhi started his first handwritten magazine at the age of 15 called Manava Nesan. He started his career as the screenwriter in Tamil films. Karunanidhi’s debut film as a writer was Rajakumari which starred M.G.R, an actor then who later started AIADMK political party. His relationship with M.G.R was initially a long-term friendship which turned into rivalry after entering into politics. Sanga Thamizh, Thirukkural Urai, Ponnar Sankar, Romapuri Pandian, Thenpandi Singam, Vellikizhamai, Nenjukku Needhi, Iniyavai Irubathu and Kuraloviam are few books written by him. The number of books written by him in both prose and poetry exceeds more than 100. At the age of 14, he supported anti-Hindi agitations. Karunanidhi was married thrice. 

Firstly in 1944 September, he was married to Padmavathi with whom he had a son M.K Muthu. Soon after the birth of their son, in 1948 Padmavathi expired. Then Karunanidhi had to get married to Dayalu Ammal, with whom he had three sons, M.K Alagiri; M.K Stalin and M.K Tamilarasu and a daughter, M.K Selvi. Karunanidhi had a daughter, Kanimozhi with his third wife, Rajathi Ammal. Muthu was actively seen in politics and films while Kanimozhi is the literature heir of Kalaignar. Selvi is seen in the political campaigns for her father. Stalin and Alagiri competed to be the successor of their father’s political fame, which Stalin prevailed. As Karunanidhi’s health conditions became worse, he decreased his political activities and public appearances from 2016. He was treated at his residence for fever two days before him getting admitted into Kauvery hospitals, Chennai due to sudden lowering of blood pressure. He passed away on 7th of August, 2018 ageing 94.
