India is now ready to have its own satellite navigation tech

Remember back in 2016 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched NavIC satellite navigation system, developed by ISRO? Well that technology is finally making its way to phones in 2020.

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has been working with Qualcomm to help them develop chipsets with NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) enabled.

Quallcomm has launched the new Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 chipsets, all of which are 4G and support the new NavIC tech.

NavIC will use the data from only 7 satellites as this tech is needed only in India and its neighbouring regions around its border for upto 1500 Kms.

ISRO claims that NavIC will be more accurate than the widely used GPS as it uses 2 bands (S and I bands)whereas GPS uses only one band (I band).

In a press statement, the ISRO chairmen, Dr. K Sivan said, "ISRO is satisfied with the efforts of Qualcomm towards incorporating NavIC and we urge OEMs to leverage it for future handset launches in India. The availability of NavIC across multiple mobile platforms will help enhance the geolocation capabilities of smartphones in the region and bring the benefits of this indigenous solution to Indian consumers for their day-to-day use."

Chinese brands Realme and Xiaomi have announced that they will be using these chipsets In their upcoming phones which will allow them to make use of NavIC.
