Aloe E-cell: Batteries made out of Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is an excellent natural moisturizer. It has many medicinal properties. But can you generate electricity from aleo vera?

Recently, the government announced the winners of the first National Start-Up Awards. Two young techies were amongst the winners for Aloe Ecell. These guys invented the world’s first eco-friendly and non-hazardous batteries. And as the name suggests these batteries are made out of aloe vera gel! Sounds unbelievable? Well, it’s true. Everybody is well aware of the fact that chemical batteries we use are highly hazardous. These batteries are one of the biggest contributors to highly toxic e-waste generators. They contained elements like Lead and Mercury. Nimisha Varma and Naveen Suman decide to do something about it. They found the best alternative in aloe vera.

Nimisha belongs to Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, while Naveen hails from Bundi, Rajasthan. These two young innovators were still completing their B. Tech studies when they started working on this problem. After long and extensive research, they found out the magic of aloe vera. And they started a company called Aloe E-cell, Pvt., Ltd. in 2018.

These batteries are eco-friendly. Hence, they are a huge step against toxic waste. Also, these batteries are economically beneficial for India as the conventional batteries costed a large sum for the import of raw materials and manufacturing. It can save USD 109 billion every year for India. The market price of these batteries is as low as Rs. 10.

Aloe vera is known as an herbal panacea against diseases. It is a natural moisturizer but little did anyone thought that this gel could produce electricity and reduce waste. Aloe vera is truly healing as it is helping to heal our earth. The startup is also nominated for the Innovation Summit organized by Schneider Electric in Barcelona.

The batteries are of 1.5V AA size. They are manufactured at a 10% cheaper cost and with 1.5 times more lifetime. This start-up can provide farmers an additional stable income.
