The mass bleaching event that wiped out 30% of the shallow water corals might have done more damage than that is known. It had damaged deeper water corals on the great barrier reef. Although deep reefs are said to be independent of anomalies like these, this mass bleaching event has caused damage to the deeper corals as well. The research team has sent remotely operated vehicles to depths of 328 feet to understand how the temperature rose to record levels even if they were present so deep.
