Oymyakon, Russia is said to be the coldest village on earth. It is known as the “Pole of Cold”, averaging -48*C in December.

The citizens of this village have to face day-to-day challenges – eye glasses can freeze faces and even if they had the service of mobile reception, the batteries tend to lose power very quickly preventing any usage of the device. The cars here have to be left running to prevent freezing of the engine and oil, when not parked in a heated garage.

Due the cold ground in the region, it is almost impossible to grow any kind of vegetation over there, the people rarely ever get to eat fruits or vegetables but still malnutrition is not a problem here. Their daily diets consist of animal products such as reindeer meat, horse meat and liver, fish and milk from several other animals.

Even though the climate of Oymyakon is cold enough, certain animals like bears, wolverines, moose, foxes and burrowing species have found their way to survive here. During the summers, various birds migrate here and feed upon the vast quantity of mosquitoes and other insects.

The population of Oymyakon is 500, despite the hard living conditions these people are living normal lives. The village has only one store to provide necessary items to the villagers and there’s also one petrol station on the way to the village for motor vehicles.

The villagers use fur to keep off the cold and keep their bodies warm. Traditional reindeer boots are still famous in this region which cost almost 300 euros.

It is mostly famous for the bone-wrecking winters as well as the breath-taking surrounding regions during the summer. Many travel agencies offer tours and treks to Oymyakon for the travel enthusiasts who wish to visit and explore the wonders of the world.
