Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at team India management for excluding Shikhar Dhawan from Lords’ playing XI. The legend reckoned that Shikhar Dhawan was once again made the scapegoat despite making more runs than Murali Vijay. Shikhar Dhawan was replaced by Cheteshwar Pujara, but Kohli assigned KL Rahul as the opener alongside Murali Vijay, while Kuldeep Yadav was also offered a spot in place of Umesh Yadav. However, Gavaskar was furious about the omission of Shikhar. Talking about this scenario, Gavaskar said that it is not right to drop Shikhar Dhawan after every match. He scored more than Murali Vijay in the last match, and despite this fact, Shikhar was omitted. He also questioned saying if you have to drop him after every match why do you take him on tour. VVS Laxman too questioned India's playing XI asking why does the axe always fall on Dhawan.
